Why does my water heater rumble?

corvette asked:

After using the hot water, the water heater makes all kinds of rumbling sounds. Is there something wrong? It’s a GAS heater about 5 yrs old.

It is just a sign that mineral deposits have become very thick in the tank. There is no way to effectively clean them out. At the age of five years you should consider a replacement anyway. for the efficiency of the heater is much less than it should be because of the mineral build up.

calcium and mineral build up, turn it off for a couple of hours and flush it out, making sure the drainage hole doesnt block up with deposits
or call a plumber to do it for you

I would think it’s because new, cold water is entering the system. It’s mixing with hot water, being heated, and causing the noise. It’s nothing to worry about. Now, if the water heater was making noise and you hadn’t used any hot water, that might be a problem.

    Good luck

sounds like you have air getting in your main water line.also it could be the ignitor starting.

The bottom of your tank is full of sediment. When you hear that snap, crackle, pop, it’s the water boiling under the sediment.
Shut off the tanks water inlet supply and hook a drain hose to it. After you open the drain valve, repeatedly turn the inlet valve on and off until the water from the drain hose runs clear.
At any rate it is nothing to worry about

A 5 yr old wayer heater should not make these kind of noises. I would try to drain off any sediment in tank. It is reccommended by manf. to do this every 6 months, There is a possiblity that your pop off valve is leaking allowing cold water to enter tank on a continuiting basis and this will also cause noise. also is it only making this noise when you draw hot water out and than stoppes making noise or is it constant until water gets hot to thermostat setting. If you can stand the noise than no probles. If it is annoying i would think of changing it out. 5 yr old isn’t old for a water heater. Most will last a good 15 yr unless it developes a leak.
