When the mouse has roared back!
The early 1980s were a very dramatic time for Disneyland. The company has recently survived the event Saul Steinberg raid company, and they recently created two new divisions Disney movie that would produce R-rated movies and such to a non-Disney focused market. Michael Eisner and Frank Wells had boarded and the energy that followed was like a wave Rising tides that swept through a park that had been languishing in a direction far too long.
The park has recently opened Fantasyland the news that was what Walt had originally intended, but short of money to build, but it was apathy on the part customers who want a great reason to visit the park again.
Many will not remember or even know that from 1955 until the end of 1984, Disneyland was closed on Monday and Tuesday for the vast park maintenance during slow winter months (our average attendance in 4000-8000 day). Last year it took place was also the last year of the old ticket books, which have been gradually with the new passport inclusive ticket that I seem to recall something like $ 8.50 for adults.
Disneyland was a team that developed the presence forecasts each year, and 1984 poses an interesting problem for this summer. This was the year of Olympic Summer Games Los Angeles, and they determined that attendance this summer was either going to be brutally heavy (something that the park had not seen in a long time), or it would be a ghost town (due to potential customers thinking, "Gee, I would go to Disneyland while we are here, but I bet that any everybody thinks the same thing, so it will be too tight. Better not go …"). The park was a ghost town all summer. It is nothing short of amazing how the masses of people can think with one brain. We often see that effect in the park, when it seemed that everyone was in the eastern part with a two-hour wait for Space Mountain and Pirates of the west side had a wait of 15 minutes.
As for cheap enter the park, the new team has been informed by the newly installed team of accountants and aggressive pricing in the parks had not followed the cost of living, and they developed a strategy that price increases would see the passports are $ 8.50 to $ 27.50 in 1991. Customers never implement all serious complaints rising prices, and frankly, Disneyland was certainly giving them their money with all the new shows and attractions that were beginning to take place, or was developing. In 1985, the headquarters of Disneyland, Inc. (Head of Tokyo Disneyland and Euro Disneyland pending) was located in what was originally conceived as a private apartment for Walt to be built above the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean (After the team relocated elsewhere, the Disney Gallery has opened for guests). I remember seeing a big sign had a thorough comparison of the two sites to study for the park Euro: France and Spain. In reviewing the comparisons, it was clear the company would go to the site Marne-la-Vallée, France.
I remember an early Disneyland projects that the new team of Michael Eisner and Wells was approved, was the purchase of the entire scene Assembly (lattice, lighting and audio) from the recent Rolling Stones tour. That would open in July 1985 as a grand experiment popular festivities known VIDEOPOLIS. Attendance rates among teenagers have risen arrow, like the scene alternated between a DJ and popular bands. He also brought a new experience for our security team: dealers drugs. Security has developed a new team of people undercover to try to fight against this new wrinkle, but they have never been successful. The dealers have too much experience to identify the hosts rather obvious security, and I think they do a bag guy.
The thirtieth anniversary of Disneyland July 17, 1985, has been what I believe to have been launched to revitalize Disneyland (and many respects, the organization Disney himself). That day was the first of many all night parties and events to follow, with the machine gift Giver to give away to each guest to come to the park in a "30" format (30 that day, the 300th, 3,000 th, etc.), possibly sanctioned by the 30 millionth guest to come in the park (which won a Cadillac luxury). It was then that many elements Typical of Disney and events have been made, such as limited edition cloisonné pins (which grows in pine-commercial), and the parties Throughout the year / holidays, to help drive attendance. 1985 was a pivotal year for the company In many ways, such as Walt Disney Productions completed its corporate identity makeover at The Walt Disney Company, WED Imagineering Walt Disney Imagineering more (WDI), and so on. He also saw the return of guests mass, and from a standpoint of attendance, he never really looked back. Those days were handed over 6K: in fact it was not uncommon to have to go through the doors 6K in one hour during the summer.
This was also the beginning of the explosion Annual Passholder, which began in 1985 and took off at the Gift Giver Promotion in 86 who saw each customer entering a prize. Some Passholders came so often, and learn about the park and the players so well, I noticed that many times these guests knew more about what was happening in the park, as does the Cast. This was also when the team found the opportunity of goods and funds to begin to design all of the unique Disney merchandise so often found today. A disadvantage of this rapid expansion and explosive paraphernalia Disney was the disappearance of several specialty stores, many around the park had been open. Instead of Cowboy and Indian items found in Single Frontierland This store has given way to … Disney Plush, Disney Candy Suckers, etc!
Another major event was launched in December 1985, when Disneyland sponsored "Skyfest" which was a Guinness Book of Records for the largest attempt to release balloons (one million), in honor of the anniversary Walt. It was the first appearance of Lillian Disney in two years, after some personal problems with the new regime. The problems were initially appeared at the dismissal of CEO, Ron Miller and then by a team led by Roy Disney, who brought in the Eisner / Wells team. Dick Nunis had an all-out attempt (with the support of Lillian Disney and his daughter Diana) to be chosen as CEO, but that effort failed, and that would be soon out of his own distance from headquarters, moving to Florida as president of Disneyland and Walt Disney World. Roy had separated families again with Disney's efforts to dethrone the son of Lillian-in-law (historically, Walt and Roy families had a very tumultuous relationship over the years).
The situation was aggravated by a slight involuntary Eisner / Wells from the start next to the second level apartment Firehouse Walt and Lillian, is a pleasant private courtyard is a perfect platform for viewing parades and fireworks. Although technically all parts of the park belonged to TWDC (The Walt Disney Company), this area had remained the exclusive use of the Disney family. When Eisner and Wells learned of this place, they immediately started to use it frequently for family and friends. Lillian severed all ties with the Company, and it was not until someone told this little faux pas to Eisner, he immediately contacted Lillian to formally apologize for reckless acts. Their first meeting took place during Skyfest. Although sentiments were somewhat recommended Lillian has gradually begun to take more away from the Disney organization.
More Opera on the screen during several years in the area of pre-show Great moments with Mr. Lincoln, Walt shows two offices. They were not re-creations, but the actual content transferred to the park when it became time to reconfigure the big end space occupied by its offices and formal work. I can check with photo documentation TWDC real offices (several months after his death), that the placement has been accurate in detail, except for what was located where the windows displayed in the park have been placed (in the office work, I can tell you its private bar, hidden by a sliding wooden Power, has been positioned essentially where you were standing at the window).
In early 1986, Lillian was his private secretary coming to the park with a very specific list, and removed items certain functions of the two offices (one of the most remarkable was the Snow White Academy Awards, which includes the seven dwarfs).
The next time this man came back, was when we were informed that their house Firehouse Lillian had suffered Ground water damage due to a broken water heater. I was part of the team that surveyed the housing, and what I saw just struck me a loop. It was like a trip back in time for the beginning 60. The contents of the apartment had been largely untouched since the death of Walt in 1966. A number of pieces of Walt, jackets and trousers, still hanging in the closet. I remember a dozen and a half of its distinctive kerchiefs smoke Ranch tree lying in a drawer. There were glass bottles on a shelf, and bar, all alcoholic beverages have been charged with writing fat black pen, long before the bar code arrived. All these unique items and personal have been withdrawn and returned to Lillian. Some years later I have the honor of being in the apartment again with Lillian, and she walked by emphasizing and reminding articles with details Perfect where and when she and Walt had received these items. I could not remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, and here she was with perfect recall about things more than 60 years before. A really graceful lady that I met during Skyfest, leaving me with memories very moving.
I had the opportunity to work with a number of people who took the time to work directly with Walt, and each of them made an indelible impression on me. A of them was Bill Evans, Walt, who originally hired to landscape his Holmby Hills Ranch, and then would go on the palette and develop entire landscape of Disneyland Magic Kingdom, Tokyo Disneyland and Euro Disneyland. It has often led Batty Landscape Department when he came to the park and has asked for certain things that were not made to move forward and now! The bill was in his 80's, then, but still drive incredible and a crushing handshake.
Another favorite was Van Arsdale France, founder of the University of Disneyland, and most programs training that all employees through a new theme park each Disney worldwide. At the time, the office has been in Van the old trailer known as "The Circle D (also known as the Pony Farm), just next to the only original house remains on Property Disneyland, and probably 70 or 80 years.
I also enjoyed the stories of a 55'er Club called Claire. It was he who first talked to me during the first two weeks that the park was open, there was an alligator living in a cage in the sky opposite The Jungle Cruise. Each morning, the maintenance crew would go out and continue to count a Gator ', because guys often do a break and get out the pit and head in the Jungle Cruise. Care would have to block the area, call over to the Alligator Farm in Buena Park, and a reader Wrangler addition to capturing the reptile Errant (s) and return them to the pit. Claire told me she was the one who, after being scared to death of nearly every week, finally stormed to Joe Fowler and demanded the withdrawal of the reptiles. I do not know if this conversation is what makes the trick, but apparently they disappeared a few days later.
Back in the Studio and WDI, Eisner was like a kid in a candy store. He spent a huge amount of its WDI time, and in a very calculating (and very successful) move from Disneyland Entertainment, they received an equal amount of attention Eisner. This would lead to a number of interesting (and often painful) as the events; Circus, State Fair, and many parts of night (often called by the players who had to work: Drunkfest Disney's).
Cirque shows have been some interesting elements, but by far my favorite was the interpreter of the barrel springs (I'm trying to remember, but I think it was known as "The Great Santini"?). In front of Pirates of the Caribbean, before the bridge queue / was built, was the location for the gun. Before the phase of development for Fantasmic was built, was a much simpler wooden stage platform in the river opposite the plant on the island of Tom Sawyer. The artist and his team has everything in place after the park closes, and early in the morning they were ready for first test firing would be a bag of special sand to bring the performers weight. The idea was to leave the gun in front of Pirate's flying over the river America, and land in a net that was set up about 6 feet above the platform / stage. While the artist's mother seated on a Workbench his worry beads, the countdown went to zero. A big boom was heard, and through a cloud of smoke emerged the sandbag. The trajectory was perfect, it arched over the river and headed for a perfect landing, dead center in the net. Unfortunately, there were some fund the proposal that had been left in place under the net, and that 200 pounds of sand bags has hit the net and it flexes under the weight of the crates were broken into pieces with a huge CRUNCH! I looked to see the mother with big eyes staring furiously working his worry beads, and son as large eyes and a furious hand working on his chin. The accessories and the remaining debris was quickly removed, and the next attempt was Santini himself. He put on his helmet, and rode headlong into the barrel. After a few moments, he called to his aid, and the gun! Santini exit the cloud of smoke seemingly slow motion, and I remember very well the outstretched hands and fingers with a look of intense terror on his face. He followed the same arc over the river and landed in the middle of the net, while capturing the net with his hands and held on the cost of living. Success! The mother was always sat, eyes closed, but I thought these beads were one second to fire, it was their work quickly. It would then perform this trick for the first times for guests less than an hour later, and you could see how relaxed and easy, it has become for him during the event.
In 1986, there were a large cable that extends upward on the Matterhorn, and a motorcyclist ran over the cable, then he climbed in reverse down. On Main Street, there was a cable that ran from the Emporium over the history of Walt Disney, and members of the extended family of the famous Flying Wallendas performed a balancing act. There was also a keystone event in this area too. The Hub has received significant changes during this period. A pit large basement concrete has been created to house all the events scheduled to take place, like a State Fair Ferris wheel, a lift to lift Cadillac Grand Prix for the Extraordinary GiftGiver, and the giant see-through metal ball known as the Globe of Death. For this event, there was a group that opened downward, and a motorcyclist came with his bike, closed the panel, began his bike and started riding at the bottom the ball until it has some momentum and began to climb higher until he began making loops inside the balloon. Very strong, but very fun for the guests. State Fair was an event even bigger and more popular, but it will be for a future article …
