Kenmore Hot Water Heater Warranty

Repair or just replace our water heater?
Hoses attached to our water heater springs a leak and water obtained under the heater thermostat WAER. A short circuit (?) Got all black and there was a strange smell in the air. Fortunately we were at home and went straight. However, we must now decide to call someone to come and repair or whether we should simply replace everything. I do not know any plumbers, then we would have to find one in the telephone directory. Is it even possible to replace thermostats on water heaters? What's that we run? In addition, if it would be short-circuited any other damage? Basically I'm just seeking advice on whether it will better / cheaper in the long run to just replace it? By the way, its Kenmore electric water heater, but I have no news of the guarantee.
You're American! I just found by searching Kenmore, as we do not have them here in the United Kingdom. I think it would be better to ask electrician to replace the damaged electric rather than replace a heater that worked before. The waterfront should still be allowed as the heating element. Definitely worth the repair, I would say.
