Sulcata tortoise shell dips slightly?
I’ve had my sulcata tortoise for 9 years now, and (he? she? still not sure) has been very healthy the whole time. I have an outdoor enclosure with trees, shrubs, and dirt; a dogloo equipped with a pigs blanket heater for the winter, and I give my tortoise water and timothy hay every day (with the occasional leftover lettuce thrown in as a treat). I live in southern California, so it is very sunny, hot, and dry for most of the year. My tortoise is very active, with clear eyes and a pink tongue. The only thing that concerns me is that lately he/she has developed a bit of a dip towards the back of the shell. I can’t figure out what might be causing this–is it normal, or a nutritional issue, or something else? Thank you for your advice!
you need to feed lots of dark leafy green lettuces and other veggies every day plus vitamin and mineral dust with calcium on the food every day. the shell may be getting deformed from poor nutrition. Tortoise do not show signs of sickness or malnutrition until it may be too late to fix it. find a herp vet and get it checked out. they can do blood work to see if it has issues.
